From the Diamond to the Gridiron: Sayre’s John Luke Minner Rising Fast in the Class of 2026
May 15th, 2025

John Luke Minner’s path to football stardom didn’t start under the Friday night lights — it started on the baseball field.

The 6’4", 225-pound linebacker/defensive end from Sayre School (KY) was a standout on the diamond before making the leap to football just ahead of his junior year. Now, less than a full season into his football career, Minner has become one of the most intriguing prospects in Kentucky’s 2026 class — and he's catching national attention.

Minner recently earned a three-star rating from 247Sports, an impressive feat for someone so new to the sport.

“I have great coaches and have been working incredibly hard, and having faith that the hard work will pay off — and it did,” Minner said. “This means even more to me because I didn’t start playing until my junior year due to my past baseball career. So it’s amazing to see how far I’ve come in a short period of time. This also means I have a high ceiling and a lot to learn — the success hasn’t stopped yet.”

Despite having just one season under his belt, Minner already holds Division I offers from Georgia State, Coastal Carolina, Marshall, Georgetown, and Grambling State. More schools have shown interest as his film continues to circulate.

“I’m blessed to have several very good opportunities right now, and it’s difficult to only name a few,” he said. “My family and I will be sitting down to pick a top three or four schools where there is a clear mutual interest.”

As he gears up for his senior season, Minner is focused on refining both the physical and technical aspects of his game.

“My size, speed, and strength have been big advantages for me, and I’ll definitely be improving those this spring,” he said. “I’m also focusing on my football technique, flexibility, hips, and hands to help me and my team next year.”

Helping guide him through the fast-moving world of recruiting is Coach Isaac and the team at 5 Star FB Recruiting, who’ve played a key role in promoting Minner’s talents to college coaches.

“With the changing recruiting world of college football, Coach Isaac has been a great counselor and is very knowledgeable about the process,” Minner said. “His connections to get many coaches’ eyes on me and my talents have been very helpful.”

While Minner hasn’t ruled out continuing his baseball career, his future on the gridiron is becoming increasingly clear. With a rare combination of size, athleticism, and untapped potential, John Luke Minner is quickly becoming a name to know in the Class of 2026 — and his best football is still ahead.
